Rule 2 also emphasizes my responsibility to use good seamanship at all times. The rule leaves a considerable amount of space for a CG inspector, Board of Inquiry, or Court to interpret my actions as good or bad seamanship based on opinion, expert testimony, case law, and more. My golden rule is this... "If I am doing something that sounds bad when I say it out loud to myself... I know it will sound bad when I say it in a pinch (or courtroom... or the 6:00 news)"... So if what I am doing doesn't sound good out loud, I reconsider my plan... Shoot... we are salvors... we are going to end up using plan b, c, or d anyway... no use using the plan that someone that sits at a desk for a living can hang me with in the name of leaglities. When John Fulwiler and I were running boats together in our early twenties I ran a salvage plan by him and he looked at me and said "Kent... what would you say in the courtroom..." Good advice John... I have used it successfully for 15 years.

Homework, "Scanty" appears in Rule 7 both Inland and Int'l "Risk of Collision" referring to "Assumptions" being made on less than reliable information, including radar, as to the actual risk of collision. - C. Meyer
